Queensland Discovering Democracy Project Activities
1. Professional Development Model, Implementation Plan and Communication Strategies
- revise professional development model
- develop implementation plan
- negotiate contract variations with DEETYA
- publicise model and implementation plan to key stakeholders
- develop communication strategy
- ongoing development of Discovering Democracy communication strategies
(production of fliers and handouts)
- plan and deliver awareness raising and familiarisation workshops.
2. Professional Development Network

3. Professional Development Audit and Environmental Scan
- audit existing school-based and other civics and citizenship professional
development programs
- develop and maintain environmental scan of events and links
4. Discovering Democracy Website
- initiate planning and development of Queensland Discovering Democracy
web site
- engage website designer
- launch Queensland Discovering Democracy web site
- publish lesson plans from Open Learning Australia (OLA) assessment
- publish best practice exemplars from school initiative grants
- ongoing development and administration of Queensland Discovering Democracy
web site.
5. University Accredited Professional Development (80-100 teachers)
- review and select University courses and units in civics and citizenship
education
- design stage 1 professional development expression of interest and information
survey
- distribute stage 1 professional development expression of interest and information
survey
- design and distribute stage 2 professional development expression of interest
and information survey
- distribute stage 2 expression of interest survey
- plan for delivery of OLA units DEM 11 and DEM 12
- audit unit contents
- maintain contact with teacher enrollees
- administer first, second and third intakes for OLA DEM 11 and DEM 12.
6. Professional Development Needs Survey
- review existing professional development needs research for the Discovering
Democracy project
- design and distribute professional development needs survey
- analyse results of needs survey
- make adjustments to project design where needed.
7. Project Evaluation
- engage outside evaluators
- plan and coordinate evaluation surveys for each project phase
- respond to results of evaluation surveys
- adjust project model and strategies where needed.
8. Professional Development Materials
- administer and distribute extra Discovering Democracy Kits
- engage designers, writers and producers for workshop manual, presenters
kit and schools kit
- manage the design and production of the materials
- materials trial and evaluation
- materials publication and distribution.
9. School Initiative Grants
- design grant applications
- administer grants
- publish reports/results.
10. Presenters Conferences (7 x 10-15 participants each)
- plan presenters conferences (Brisbane 1; Gold Coast; Sunshine Coast;
Rockhampton; Toowoomba, Brisbane 2; Townsville/Cairns)
- conduct presenters conferences (Brisbane 1; Gold Coast; Sunshine Coast;
Rockhampton; Toowoomba, Brisbane 2; Townsville/Cairns)
- initiate planning for final network conferences.
11. Teacher Workshops (80 x 7-8 participants)
- design workshops
- plan for workshop delivery
- establish and maintain contact with workshop presenters
- coordinate statewide workshop delivery
- evaluate workshop design and delivery.
12. Teachers' Conference (Cairns, March 2000)
- plan concluding network conferences
- coordinate conference organisation.
